Safety check inspection is mandatory when renewing your vehicle registration. Typically, light vehicles over five years old necessitate a safety check (formerly known as a pink slip) prior to registration renewal. Light vehicles encompass passenger cars, goods carrying vehicles (without power-operated brakes), motorcycles, and trailers or caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less. Safety checks are exclusively conducted at authorised inspection scheme stations, with results electronically transmitted to Roads and Maritime.

Once your vehicle passes the safety check, registration renewal is possible. Safety check reports for light vehicles remain valid for six months (excluding public passenger vehicles), requiring renewal within that period.
